A Family Gathering That Changed Everything
Most running crews begin with a long, solitary run and a quiet wish for company. Broward Running Society began at a kitchen table. In March 2023, a handful of friends gathered in Plantation, Florida, for what started as an ordinary family get-together. Somewhere between the conversation and the food, the idea surfaced: why didn't Broward County have its own run crew? By the end of the afternoon, five people had decided to build one. That founding moment, equal parts spontaneous and inevitable, set the tone for everything that followed. Elvis, the crew's primary visionary, knew exactly what he was chasing. He had moved to Florida from New York City during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving behind a running community that had shaped his daily life. His early attempts to plug into crews in the Miami area ran into a simple geographic problem: Broward County, sitting between Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, was an underserved gap on the running map. At the 2022 Miami Half Marathon, he met Katherine, a runner who had relocated from Boston. Both worked in healthcare. Both felt the same pull toward community. When Katherine moved to Florida in November 2022, the conversation about building something local became impossible to ignore. Then came the gathering, and with it, Rick, TaniaFeatured Crew
