Introducing The Nine Four
The Nine Four is a running club in Cape Town, South Africa. Founded in 2013, the club is partially sponsored by Puma. The founder, Paul, a photographer and director, was inspired by a running club he joined in Berlin called the Berlin Braves. He returned to South Africa and founded The Nine Four with friends.
More Than Just Running: The Philosophy of The Nine Four
The name “The Nine Four” is derived from 1994, when South Africa became a democratic state. The name represents a crew that mixes people, including those who would have been illegal in the previous old South Africa. The club’s white rabbit logo symbolizes an animal you can chase but would struggle to catch. It represents a group that will be there for you no matter what, help you better yourself, and push towards your goals.
A Safe Space for Personal Growth and Camaraderie
Although the golden thread is running, it has nothing to do with running, in all honesty. The Nine Four is not just a running club; it’s a family of people who meet up two to three times a week. It’s a safe space where your ego is left at the door, and you can be yourself without society’s pressures and stigmas.
Unlikely Individuals, United by Running: The Members of The Nine Four
The club aims to create a space for individuals to unite through running, a passion for creativity, and partying. The club’s exclusivity helps to build a sense of community among members. Members come from all walks of life, and although they may appear unlikely, this makes the beat of the Nine Four rumble.
Running is an individual thing, and it’s deeply personal. However, in a crew, you have people who can help you through it and encourage you to keep going. The Nine Four is a small group of unlikely individuals who have come together to be better. From starting with short runs around the block in mismatched clothes to working now towards running the longest race of their lives, the Nine Four is a team working together to become a family.
