MadOne Crew Hong Kong’s Dedicated Community Pursuing Running Goals Together
MadOne Crew emerged in Hong Kong in April 2014, founded by Simon, a seasoned running coach with experience dating back to 2001. Simon’s leadership as a Nike Run Club coach during the 2013 Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon revealed the untapped potential in a group of runners who had not trained regularly but still achieved personal bests on race day. Motivated by their determination, Simon designed a year-long training program and formed MadOne, inviting athletes from his former crew InvitedR and other Nike Run Club members to join this new collective. Since then, MadOne has grown into a small but dedicated crew of around 30 runners united by a shared passion for progress and camaraderie.
A Name Reflecting Passion And Unity
The name MadOne combines the words “Mad” and “One” to embody the crew’s core spirit. “Mad” speaks to their relentless dedication to training and goal completion regardless of challenges. It also nods to Simon’s reputation as a “Madness coach.” “One” symbolizes the sense of community and the joy found in shared experiences. This name is inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s quote, “In a mad world, only the mad are sane,” underscoring their drive to thrive amid adversity and find strength together.
Where Shared Miles Build Lasting Bonds
MadOne welcomes runners of all levels, creating a supportive and inclusive environment where members exchange experiences, face challenges, and celebrate improvements. Their community extends beyond running, fostering friendships and mutual encouragement. The crew’s atmosphere balances motivation with camaraderie, reflecting Simon’s coaching ethos and the collective spirit that keeps the group connected through regular training and social interactions.
Structured Training Twice Weekly For Growth
MadOne meets twice weekly for focused training sessions. Mondays bring interval workouts at Sham Shui Po Sports Ground or Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground, sharpening speed and stamina. Fridays are reserved for longer runs through Causeway Bay Sports Ground or Victoria Park, building endurance at paces ranging from 3 minutes 50 seconds to 5 minutes per kilometre. These consistent sessions support runners from beginners to those aiming to improve personal records, blending challenge with community support.
Open Doors For Every Runner
Membership at MadOne is open to anyone eager to run, regardless of experience. The crew’s ethos encourages newcomers to find their footing and seasoned runners to push their limits within a nurturing setting. Interested runners can join training sessions at the crew’s base in Victoria Park or the other meeting points and connect with members to experience the MadOne approach to running and community.
Hong Kong’s Vibrant Running Landscape
Within Hong Kong’s lively running community, MadOne stands as one of several crews fostering connection through shared passion. The city’s numerous running groups provide opportunities for accountability and social engagement. MadOne’s presence enriches this network, contributing to a diverse ecosystem where runners of all abilities find support and motivation amid the urban energy.
Urban Energy Meets Natural Escape
Hong Kong offers a unique backdrop for running, from the dense streets of Central to the green heights of Victoria Peak. This dynamic cityscape challenges and inspires runners, blending urban intensity with natural scenery. For MadOne, running is not just exercise but an exploration of the city’s contrasting spaces, forging a connection between physical effort and place.
Iconic Routes Shaping The Crew’s Rhythm
Typical MadOne runs navigate well-known Hong Kong locations, including interval sessions at Sham Shui Po and Hammer Hill Road Sports Grounds and long-distance efforts around Causeway Bay and Victoria Park. These venues provide varied terrain and atmosphere, allowing runners to develop speed, endurance, and familiarity with the city’s pulse while enjoying the company of fellow members.
Racing Through Hong Kong’s Signature Events
MadOne’s calendar aligns with Hong Kong’s prominent races such as the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon and Oxfam Trailwalker. These events draw runners from across the globe and offer the crew opportunities to challenge themselves, celebrate milestones, and deepen their collective identity within the city’s renowned running culture. The crew’s foundation in purposeful training reflects these ambitions and the vibrant competitive spirit Hong Kong fosters.
